Eluvium 2021: Recognized Among the 20 Best Merlots of 2025

We are thrilled to share that our 2021 Eluvium has been honored by VinePair with a 95 point review and inclusion in their list of the Best Merlots of 2025. This recognition places Eluvium not only among the finest expressions of Merlot in Virginia, but also alongside some of the most compelling wines from across the world.

What VinePair Had to Say

In their review, VinePair praised Eluvium as “the most age-worthy Merlot in Virginia,” noting:

“It’s drinking so well in its youth, but with a few more years this wine is just going to get better. It’s also a Merlot that will evolve in the decanter or will open up as you sit with it in your glass at the table. As air interacts with this wine it really begins to shine. The nose offers savory balsamic mingling with wild berry fruit. The palate is elegant and refined with focused fruit and present acidity. The wine gives the perception of brightness while still showing depth.”

The 2021 Eluvium is a testament to both power and refined nuance. The aroma is richer than previous vintages, with a dense bouquet of black stone fruits and spice, lifted by notes of dark berries, leather, dried herbs, and violets. Dried fennel, cranberry, and a distinctive desiccated citrus thread brightness through its savory profile. On the palate, Eluvium offers moderate-plus weight balanced by lively acidity and extended tannins, showcasing artful craftsmanship and the essence of our mountainside vineyards in every bottle.

Composition

78% Merlot, 22% Petit Verdot

Bottled: March 13, 2023

Alcohol: 14.3%

Aged 18 months in French barrique (40% new oak)

Winemaker’s Note

“Eluvium represents power, but with nuance. On the surface, the blend may seem straightforward, but the diversity of vineyard sites and resulting wines bring remarkable complexity. We balance Merlot with Petit Verdot, often noted for its boldness, but our approach highlights its aromatic and floral qualities alongside brooding, dense fruit. Sourced from mountainside sites, we pick our Petit Verdot based on flavor and balance, enhancing its ethereal qualities with whole cluster inclusion during fermentation to reveal a full range of aromas in the final blend.” - Maya Hood White

Aging & Cellaring

2021 Eluvium was aged for 18 months in French oak barrique, 40% new. Aeration is recommended. This wine will continue to develop and drink beautifully for 10+ years with proper cellaring.
